The Duke of Edinburgh's Award is
a programme of personal development made up of four sections:
Skill, Service, Physical Activity and Expedition. |
| Students work individually on all
sections except the Expedition, which is done in small groups,
travelling away for two weekends with the school. All the requirements
for the Award can be found on the national website at www.theaward.org. |

Bronze Information and Forms |
| The Bronze Award runs
each year at Comberton for Year 9 pupils. We usually have about
100 pupils sign up, and we're hoping this year will be another
record year. The parental meeting has already past, but if you
missed any of the documents at the meeting, or if your son/daughter
has changed their mind, all the information and documents you
need are here. |
| In order to be enrolled, you need to return
the Consent Form, and the CCC Enrolment Form together with payment
to the Community Education Office by Friday 7 March. If you
could please also get your son/daughter to decide on the group
they want to walk in (minimum 4, maximum 7 per group) and hand
in one form per group to Community Education as well. |
| More details on training and the trips will
follow nearer the time |

| All the information on the Silver is below.
Consent forms and money were due in at Community Education by
29 February, but if you missed the deadline, please get them
in as soon as possible so we can confirm all the bookings for
the expeditions. |
| The first training day is coming up soon, on
Sunday 16 March at Ashdon Village Hall near Saffron Walden and
the first expedition is not long after Easter on Friday 25 April.

| Silver
Practice Expedition, Friday 25 – Monday 28 April 2008 |
| Following the extremely
successful training day at Ashdon Village Hall before Easter,
our first expedition as a silver group is now fast approaching.
Pupils have put themselves into groups (mostly) and each group
has been given route
planning instructions, a copy of the map, and six copies
of the route cards.
The deadline to hand in: |
A photocopy of the map for each day with the route highlighted.
Two copies
of each day’s route card completed.
The route
planning instructions sheet.
The brown
envelope with their names marked on. |
| is Thursday 18 April by 1300 to the magazine
rack outside Ma 2. |
| If pupils have lost any of this paperwork,
or want to type their route cards, the necessary documents are
provided here (see above). |
| Equipment will be available to borrow from
Monday. We have |
3-man tents.
2-man tents.
Large trangias
(for 3 people).
Rucksacks.
Some sleeping
mats. |
| If your son/daughter needs to borrow equipment,
a letter can be obtained from Mr Bellis, or they are provided
here below as well. (to follow) |
| Please check if you are using your own equipment
that it is still in good working order, that it all still fits
(feet grow!) and that you have everything on the silver kit
list – it’s a little longer than the bronze one. |
| Finally, groups need to be planning what they
will eat over the weekend. This is even more important than
for Bronze, as the extra day has a big impact. Having a full
stomach makes a huge difference between a miserable expedition
and a brilliant one – think it through carefully. Full guidance
is on the back of the kit list, or you can email
with any queries. |
| Looking forward to a great weekend; here’s
hoping there is no snow!! |
